In this week’s episode, we welcome Justin Kolbeck, CEO, and Co-Founder at Wildtype, a cultivated seafood brand on a mission to create the most sustainable seafood on earth. Wildtype uses cellular agriculture techniques which provide consumers with new options for real seafood that has the same nutritional benefits as wild-caught fish but without contaminants such as mercury, microplastics, antibiotics, or pesticides and without relying on commercial fishing or fish farming. Prior to founding Wildtype with friend and cardiologist, Ayré Elfenbein, Kolbeck fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a diplomat. His career led him to assignments in Pakistan, Australia, and Afghanistan. His exposure to acute food insecurity in Afghanistan left a lasting impression on him and convinced him that something must be done to reverse trends of global food insecurity. Wildtype is the first and only cultivated seafood brand to raise $100 million in Series B funding with high-profile investors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downing Jr., and Jeff Bezos.
